Who runs the podcast world? Well on the surface, it does sound a lot like white guys just talking to other white guys. But dig deeper and you will find other interesting and diverse voices. In the spirit of #trypod for the month of March, we look at 9 badass shows that are hosted by women and catered for the female audience.
Women-hosted podcasts may be few and far between, but there are great ones out there which are well worth the listen. In fact, women are slowly but increasingly using podcasts as their platform. There’s an honesty about the format that comes with the freedom to express ourselves. We can talk about any topic under the sun, from politics, sexism and entrepreneurship to entertainment, spirituality and self-improvement. We can speak openly and frankly with our friends, family, and fans. We can debate the fate of Dolores in next season of Westworld or make fun of weird situations like bad tinder dates.
No matter what subject you are into, there’s a podcast for you. Here are 9 of our favourite women-hosted podcasts to get you started.
Hosts Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin get down to the business of being a woman, including all the stuff that your mom hasn’t told you about like boys, bodies, and sex. We love how they handle serious topics like the history of abortion and International Women’s Day as well as quirky offbeat subjects like Hollywood ‘s first ever Brangelina and female facial hair.
The dope queens in question are Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams who are both killing it in the comedy scene right now. The dynamic duo hosts a live comedy show from Brooklyn, showcasing featuring their favourite comedians and covering all important topics such as boob sweat, natural hair and making man buns great again. They are the women whom you want to share a beer and crack one-liners with, whether they are talking about HPV, doling out advice on heartbreak or debating if Lenny Kravitz is hot (Hint: It’s all in the scarf.)
Podcasts have been around for a while but it was Serial that propelled them to the mainstream. Hosted by Sarah Koenig, the cold murder case from Baltimore triggered a national conversation and made armchair investigators out of us all. The producers are keeping mum about their plans for the latest season though Koenig was spotted at a Cleveland trial in November.
Listening to Emily Thompson and Kathleen Shannon is like catching up with your “business besties” from the confines of your headphones. As entrepreneurs themselves, the ladies are the real deal as they share expert advice from the guests and their insights to the world of entrepreneurship in a way that motivates you to just DO IT. Feeling discouraged? They’ve got your back. Not sure about your business? They are figuring it out too. Whether you’re a first-time entrepreneur or seasoned guru, there’s something on Being Boss for anybody with ambition.
Buzzfeed’s Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton tackle blackness, pop culture and gender equality, drinks in hand. So expect bad jokes and debates about squirrels and mangoes, all in one boozy show. Candid and entertaining, they have hosted popular guests like Ta-Nehisi Coates, Lena Dunam and asked Hillary Clinton what kind of deodorant she prefers. (Spoiler: It’s stick.)
Come for Cleopatra VII, stay for Lucille Ball. This is not your typical high school history class but way better! It’s like inviting two BFF into your house to have an entertaining and informative conversation about the badass women in history. Engaging and thorough, Beckett Graham and Susan Vollenweider share with us herstories of pioneering women, both widely known and virtually unknown.
It’s time for women to proudly nerd over the airwaves and Greta Johnsen and Tricia Bobeda are doing it right. For the past three years, they have spoken to astronauts, comedians, feminists, writers and other “people we like about the stuff that they make.” If you are mad about Game of Thrones like we do, listen out for their spinoff, Nerdette Recaps Game Of Thrones With Peter Sagal where they scrutinize the latest episodes.
Fans of the defunct Chewing The Fat do not despair. Food journalists Louisa Chu and Monica Eng are back with a brand new food and health show! Intelligen
