It’s February and Mary Houlihan, our Tailored Tomboy style advisor is back with a brand new perspective on fashion and tomboy style. That it’s not just about what’s trending – it’s about how the clothing you wear inspires coolness and confidence when you wear it “YOU” style.
As much as I want to decorate this article with chocolate hearts and kisses in celebration of Valentine’s Day, I feel more compelled to write about how clothing can aid in feeling confident. This time of year we are usually beginning our new year’s resolutions, working out all the time, cleansing and looking at photos of Jillian Michaels to keep us inspired!
The goal is usually to change our bodies so we can wear the clothing that makes us feel most confident or change our bodies so we can then feel confident, period. What if we decided to start dressing in a way that makes us feel confident right now instead of waiting to change your body? It’s all about clothing and confidence “you” style after all baby.
What I’m talking about is not about wearing the most expensive thing or the most “in-style” thing or even the most “tomboy” thing. What I’m talking about is wearing the most “YOU” styled thing. The types of clothing and apparel that makes you feel like Beyonce in a music video, a guest on Ellen or the most confident you have ever been in your entire life.
In an article by Vogue Magazine titled Confidence Dressing; How Clothing Affects the Mind, Gabriela Palmieri, senior vice president at Sotheby’s in New York was quoted saying “A power outfit for me always begins with a great pair of heels.” And when I read that, I thought “Ouch!” And “You go girl but, not me!” A power outfit for me always begins with a blazer and a pair of comfortable shoes. When I feel really awesome in my outfit I hope that I will be photographed because I look so cool and confident.
The point isn’t to mimic what makes someone else feel confident. The point is to do the hard work in finding out what pieces of clothing make you feel the best. Start paying attention to what you are wearing when you feel the most confident. It could be part of the reason you feel the way you feel. From there, you’ll be able to hone your fashion instincts about what works and doesn’t work for you.
