Hey tomboy troopers! It’s edition #16 of our inspiring tomboy style looks of the week. This time, we stalked Instagram to bring you the best looks being rocked by our tomboy ladies 50 and above. Check out our seniors edition below and remember, just coz you’re old(er) doesn’t mean you can’t kick ass.
Andy Warhol once said that “Since people are going to be living longer and getting older, they’ll just have to learn how to be babies longer.”
We tomboys are kind of like that. No matter what our physical age, our spirits remain young. In this ‘sweet #16’ edition we will be paying homage to the ladies 50 and above who are pulling off classic tomboy influenced style like they were teens.
In case you didn’t know what this series is all about – well, we started it to celebrate and appreciate the women who are inventing their own timeless inspiring classic tomboy style looks.
Thanks to the amazing Ari Seth Cohen who’s curating everything cool about our rocking older generation in his massively successful blog, Advanced Style, we were able to feature some looks from there, amongst others.
So check out the cool styles of edition #16 with our fabulous personalities down below and hashtag us at #tomboytarts on Instagram with full-length pictures of yourselves if you want to be *featured.
Ditch the wheelchairs people and get your wisdom caps on.
@SARAMAIJEWELS & @VALERIE_VON_SOBEL via @ADVANCEDSTYLE
Who said older women were all whiling their days away on a rocking chair and cashing out on their social security checks? No freaking waaaay! In this photo, we see not just one stylish lady here but two amazing ladies where age and fashion have no relation at all. Saramaijewels is a regular feature on Advanced Style and she is always rocking a punk look while NYC philanthropist and artist, Valeri Von Sobel is decked out in a serious goth-influenced outfit of the day. You can follow more of their looks on their individual Instagram accounts. Look up Saramaijewels here and Valerie Von Sobel here.
Dubbed an Instagram It Girl by the Daily Telegraph at 60 years old, dressed in a medley of ethnic prints, Adidas originals and baseball hats, Sarah Jane Adams defies the perception of age. With 46K followers on Instagram, she sure knows how to rock her multi-coloured prints and colours together and we are absolutely digging it! Photographers and stylists the world over clamour for her to model in photo shoots against grafitti walls – a visual shorthand to convey unconventional style in age and identity. In late 2015 Sarah joined Grey Model Agency – dedicated to beautifully-ageing male and female models. Here she is in a flannel red Adidas jacket which she has paired off with graffiti printed jeans and cyber-designed Adidas sweatshirt. No young tomboy can pull this off so give this lady a round of applause for what she is doing for modelling okay? Check out more looks and styles her official site or her Instagram account. Now we’re going to try out luck to see if we can borrow her outfits for our own upcoming photo shoot! LOL!
Say hello to Cynthia Pastor, another woman over 60 who is rocking her own unique tomboy-influenced styles on social media. This interior designer is seriously a print-crazy chick too. Here she is wearing printed cotton pants and has it matched with a printed top and flower jacket with a bob do and wicked sunglasses to match. How is she pulling off this look? Well, just follow her on Instagram and ask her. We’re just bowled over by this quirky tomboy-styled look.

We really gotta love this mother-daughter combo photo where the 70s are being seriously channelled. Our crystal balls also forecast that the 70s look will be back so go dig up your mother’s disco or boot cut pants because these styles will be back on the runway yet again. Here, we see Amanda Dolan, owner of virtual vintage shop, SPARKPRETTY, pulling off a very popular tomboy-style from the era, all ready to head out for a fun night about town. Follow Amanda on Instagram for more vintage fun.
MARA WEST via @ADVANCEDSTYLE
Mara West recently killed the competition with this rockabilly 50s look at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. Check out the studded leather jacket, floral blouse and scarf which evokes old-time tomboy style. Something we are loving so much! Thanks Advanced Style for this amazing photo!
DIANE KEATON via @UNIQLO
When it comes to tomboy style, Diane Keaton defined it with her andro-femme take on suits, shoes and caps. Her Annie Hall look is still as popular today with women as the day it was created for the film. Since then, she has amazingly been able to create her own signature tomboy style that emphasises well-cut suits, tailored bespoke shirts, sunglasses, hats and brogues. Here, we see her in a plaid suit and tie ensemble for Uniqlo, rocking it in chic fashion as she usually does! What an inspiration!
